Compacteur de déchets industriels — solution de gestion des déchets pour installations industrielles

How compactor telemanagement works: complete guide

What is compactor telemanagement?

Compactor telemanagement refers to the ability to monitor, control, and operate one or more waste compactors remotely, without physical presence on site. This technology relies on a supervision box installed on the compactor’s electrical cabinet, which captures the machine’s signals and transmits them to a cloud platform via a cellular network (4G LTE or NB-IoT).

Compactor telemanagement is based on capturing the electrical signals generated by the device at each event: compaction cycle, fill level, fault.

By activating compactor telemanagement, the operator gains real-time access to every event.

Concretely, an operator can check the fill level of a compactor, consult its compaction cycle history, and receive alerts in case of malfunction — all from a dashboard accessible from any web browser or smartphone.

The components of a telemanagement system

A compactor telemanagement system consists of three fundamental elements:

The supervision box. Installed on the 24V AC electrical cabinet of the compactor, it collects electrical signals from the digital inputs and transmits them via a 4G LTE modem with automatic roaming multi-operator SIM (Orange, SFR, Bouygues Telecom), ensuring maximum coverage across French territory.

Sensors and inputs. The box connects to the existing electrical signals of the control cabinet. The captured signals include: powered state, ¾ full signal, full signal, emergency stop, oil level, and presence of the collection hopper.

The software platform. It receives the data transmitted by the box and presents it as a visual dashboard. The operator finds the GPS position of each compactor, its current fill level, sensor status, and alert history.

How does the box retrieve data from the compactor?

The waste compactor is equipped with an electrical cabinet that operates on 24V AC. This cabinet generates logic signals (24V = active, 0V = inactive) for each machine state. The telemanagement box connects to these signals via its digital inputs. When the signal changes state (for example, transitioning from ¾ full to full), the box detects the change and transmits a timestamped alert to the platform.

This operation presents a major advantage: there is no specific wiring required. The box plugs into the existing cabinet in 15 minutes, with no modification to the compactor itself.

Data transmission: 4G, NB-IoT, and MQTT

The data collected by the box is transmitted using the MQTT protocol (Message Queuing Telemetry Transport). This lightweight protocol is designed for IoT communications: latency under 100 milliseconds. Data is encrypted end-to-end (TLS). The collected data includes fill level measured automatically 4G connectivity is detailed in our article on connecting compactors in 4G

The network uses conventional 4G LTE in areas with good coverage, and automatically switches to NB-IoT in low-signal environments — particularly in basements or technical rooms.

What you see in real time

Fill level. The ¾ full signal alerts you when the compactor reaches three-quarters of its capacity — the optimal moment to schedule the next collection. The full signal alerts you in case of imminent overflow.

Compaction cycles. Each compaction cycle is recorded. Analysis of the number of cycles per period helps understand the pace of waste input and refine predictions.

Anomaly alerts. Emergency stop triggered, low oil level, or hopper absence generate immediate email alerts.

History. All data is retained. History enables trend analysis and planning of preventive maintenance interventions.

Predicting the next full

The system analyzes each compactor’s compaction history to estimate the date of the next full. If a compactor performs an average of 5 cycles per day and full capacity is reached after 60 cycles, the system predicts the next full at J+4. The operator can then organize the route before the compactor overflows.

How much does compactor telemanagement cost?

Hardware. The supervision box is offered at approximately 250 € HT, installation included. Compatible with all compactors on the market.

Subscription. The software subscription starts at 14 € HT per month per box. Includes platform access, email alerts, OTA updates, and technical support. Monthly, with no long-term commitment.

For a fleet of 10 compactors: 2 500 € HT initial investment, 140 € HT per month — when a single unplanned collection route can represent several hundred euros.

Installation: 15 minutes per compactor

The box plugs into the compactor’s 24V AC electrical cabinet. 4G pairing is automatic — the box appears on the platform as soon as it powers on. No software configuration is required on the client side.

Frequently asked questions

Does telemanagement work with all compactors?
Yes. The box connects to the 24V AC electrical cabinet of any compactor, regardless of brand. No modification to the compactor is required.

What happens during a power outage?
The box integrates a backup battery that maintains alert transmission for several hours without external power.

Can data be integrated into our ERP?
Yes. The platform provides an open API for integrating fill level and alert data into a third-party system (ERP, CMMS, WMS).

Summary

Compactor telemanagement transforms waste management from reactive to proactive. Instead of waiting for a compactor to overflow before reacting, the operator has real-time visibility and can anticipate interventions. This approach reduces collection costs, prevents overflows, and extends equipment lifespan through preventive maintenance.
